Homeschooling in NSW — navigate the Authorised Person process with confidence

NSW home schooling is regulated through the NSW Department of Education. Unlike other states, registration requires an in-home visit from an Authorised Person — but with the right preparation, it's straightforward.

Key facts — New South Wales

Regulator: NSW Department of Education Age range: 6 to 17 years

Cost: Free

Home visit required: Yes — Authorised Person visit

Decision time: 4–8 weeks

Renewal: Every 1–2 years (requires AP visit)

Curriculum required: Yes — based on NESA syllabuses

NSW home schooling stands apart from Victoria and Queensland because of one thing: the Authorised Person (AP) visit. Before registration is granted, an NESA-appointed inspector will visit your home to review your educational program, meet your child, and see your learning environment. The AP visit is not an inspection — it's a conversation. Authorised Persons understand that home education looks different to school. They want to see that you have a clear program, that your child's learning needs are considered, and that you're organised enough to deliver on it. Your educational program must be based on NESA syllabuses — but this doesn't mean following school exactly. Unschooling and child-led learning are legal in NSW — you just need to frame your plan in syllabus language. Apply at least 3 months before you want to begin. Your child must stay enrolled at school throughout the process.
